Bicarb & Human Health

Welcome to Worth-a-Word Wednesdays, where I review and summarise a study or article that I think provides some useful and interesting information. This week – Bicarb and health!

Association between sodium bicarbonate consumption and human health: A systematic review.

This systematic review was published by Fakhri, Y., et al. (2016) in the International Journal of Medical Research & Health Sciences, 2016, 5, 8:22-29.

Today we are talking about a 2016 systematic review of Bicarb consumption and its effects on human health. This review analysed 14 studies and found some worthwhile information;

  • Consuming sodium bicarbonate can reduce heart disease index
  • Consumption of sodium bicarbonate for 2 months can result in decreased LDL-cholesterol, total cholesterol and blood pressure
  • Sodium bicarbonate consumption can reduce the risk of cardiac diseases in young men and women
  • Consumption of sodium bicarbonate can act as a ‘buffer’ to increase the performance of athletes
  • It can cause a decrease in fasting blood glucose, total serum cholesterol, LDL (bad cholesterol) and cardiovascular risk index and an increase in HDL (good cholesterol) in healthy postmenopausal women
  • The review found no evidence to support the thinking that sodium bicarbonate had harmful side effects. But found many benefits of using this compound in therapeutic doses.
